In Aukštieji Šančiai, which is located very close to the city centre of Kaunas, there is a hill known not only as "Šančių piliakalnis" but also as Aukštapilis. The oak grove of Aukštieji Šančiai on the upper terrace of the right bank of the Nemunas, which surrounds it, is the smallest surviving part of the oak grove surrounding Kaunas. You can find the mound by driving from K. Baršauskas Street.
Members of the ancient Baltic religious community "Romuva" established a sanctuary next to the mound, and a built altar on the site in front of it. After visiting the mound, visit the Aukštieji Šančiai soldiers' cemetery, established in 1891 outside the then boundaries of the city of Kaunas. A total of 7 burial blocks were formed in the cemetery historically, Russian, German and Lithuanian soldiers were buried there. The rows of graves in the second plot of Lithuanian soldiers reproduce the design of the Gediminaičiai pillars.
