When one makes their way to the cottages at Seven Coves, they begin by entering through an understated rustic barn wood door set within a dry stacked stone wall. And then you cross the precipice into the property, and an enchanting meandering footpath takes you through a mysteriously beautiful ancient Cypress Grove. All about you, these contorted sculptural trees express both the grace of age and the agony of contorted limbs shaped through the unkind elements of time.
As you approach the home, you find yourself 150 feet above the junction of land and sea, looking down upon the crashing waves from the panoramic coastal cliffside. The constant static resonance of the ocean has now become a dull roar as you approach the front door of the North Cottage (at Seven Coves).
As the door swings ajar, one takes in the inviting and cozy living room of the North Cottage, while at the same time rationalizing the sheer scale and audacity of its stone work. The centerpiece, a bohemian fireplace with a 12,000 pound hearth stone and an 8,000 pound lintel, invites the unsuspecting visitor to gather there-around and toast in good cheer, as if present in one of the great fortalices of a medieval past. While through the windows to the West the heartbeat is set arrest once again, by a stand of three cryptically beautiful Cypress trees interwoven wild before a cerulean sea of infinity.At the eastern quadrant of the living room the kitchen offers a world-class view of the ocean cove, and exudes a rustic charm that complements the adjoining living room. The design of the kitchen reinforces the authentically-aged yet always refined look that carries through the entire property. The cabinetry is all custom-made with wood salvaged from a 100 year old barn in Missouri. It features a white-brass farm sink embedded in a charcoal soapstone countertops, plus Subzero, LaCornue and Miele appliances, some of which are artfully hidden by a highly textured wood door paneling.
As one exits the kitchen the stone stairwell features an intricate, delicately-curved handrail, created by local artisans, and at the top you enter the cheerful sundrenched master bedroom. The view from the Master is spectacular, the ocean light from Cormorant Cove below casting reflective sequins which dance off the smooth glossed surfaces of the Venetian plastered walls. The south wall of the master bedroom is dominated by another unique stone fireplace which anchors and warms the room. The artwork here includes a painting by Carmel artist Ferdinand Burgdorff, (1881-1975). This painting beautifully portrays the natural beauty of the Carmel Highlands and it formerly hung in the great hall of the Bohemian Club in San Francisco.While the master bedroom carries through with that familiar theme of rustic ambience and elegance, one immediately responds to the more refined set of finishes in the adjoining master bathroom. A family of hand colored pastel tiles installed in both the Master and adjoining Guestroom work to soften and dilute the stronger more masculine character of many of the stone finishes. The tiles flow beautifully into the imported French antique Gray Barre limestone floors that also lighten the look and feel of the bathrooms. The walls above the vanity are finished with a lighter pastel palette of intricate tiles; while the vanity itself is composed of an exquisite singular slab of limestone with custom engraved inset sinks accented above by candelabra sconce lighting tastefully done in a matted nickel that was selected to complement the antique zinc finish of the stylish waterworks bathtub.
In all the North Cottage offers a very comfortable 2,100 sf incorporating two ensuite bedrooms, a gourmet kitchen with adjoining dining and living room areas; all of which have magically sumptuous and dramatic ocean views. The North Cottage also offers a small but efficient business center at the end of its upstairs hallway.
The rustic and beautiful South Cottage which is approximately 2,400 square feet resides at the e furthest south coastal inlet of the Spindrifts’ Seven Coves. The home is dramatically cited at the precipice of land and sea, perched atop of the coastal cliffs approximately 120 feet above the crashing waves. The home is completely laden with imported dry stacked Moss rock which was brought in by the truckload from a famous quarry in Great Falls, Montana. The living room, open-air kitchen, and dining room are all optimally positioned to take advantage of these jaw-dropping ocean views.
The Forest Cottage (800 sf) is appropriately named as it sits nestled quietly amongst the ancient Cypress trees that pervade the central portions of the property. The Forest Cottage is the perfect snug refuge for both adults and kids as it contains one King/Queen bedroom plus an adjoining sitting room with a comfortable Queen sized sofa sleeper. The master bedroom is joined by a full bathroom with a combination shower/tub, beautiful custom cabinetry, and a very cool live-edge granite slab vanity with a rudimentary glass bowl sink perched on top.
Guests at the Forest Cottage will enjoy stepping out onto the thick flagstone decks surrounding the home to take in the fresh ocean air and gaze through the forest to the ocean beyond. A custom gas fire pit carved directly into the flagstone deck offers an inviting place to gather with friends or other guests of the compound, to take in the spectacular sunsets, or simply stargaze at the amazingly clear night sky. All will benefit from the restorative quiet beauty of this cottage, situated within the cryptically engaging Cypress forest perched above the thrilling sea. This Cottage also has a simple but well-appointed kitchenette; including a small refrigerator, sink, hot plate, microwave oven, and is stocked with dishes, glasses and utensils, a coffee machine, and basic condiments. It also has a washer and dryer. The Forest Cottage is conveniently located within steps of the Seven Coves’ fitness facilities, just 30 feet to the South.
